Valorisation des répertoires musicaux classiques afro-diasporiques (Valorization of classical Afro-diasporic musical repertoires)

Journées d’étude on September 29 and 30, 2023 at the University of Montreal and UQAM

When we talk about “Haitian music”, we first think of popular music (meringué, konpa), folk music (rara), or religious music (vodou), but rarely of classical music, yet we have a repertoire of scholarly music which dates back to the 19th century, one of the most striking traces of which is the libretto of the vaudeville opera by le Conte de Rosiers, L’Entrée du Roi, en sa capitale (1818, The Arriving of the King, in His Capital).

It is, among other things, this Haitian repertoire that musicologists, composers, and performers will question or interpret during the journées d’étude of September 29 and 30, 2023 at the University of Montreal and UQAM, Valorisation des répertoires musicaux classiques afro-diasporiques (Valorization of Afro- diasporic classical musical repertoires).

In the meantime, to find out more about this Haitian heritage, or if you don’t think you can be there, to see, to read, to listen:

Société de Recherche et de Diffusion de la Musique Haïtienne (SRDMH) whose mission since its founding in Montreal in 1977 is to promote classical music, composers and Haitian performers

Bonne lecture!
