Implementation Context for SOHADERK Pilot Projects

Through community-led pilot projects in Kenscoff, HDN and SOHADERK are advancing renewable energy, local production, and economic self-reliance.

SOHADERK and HDN

CONTEXT:

For several decades, Haiti has faced an acute nutritional need due to the low contribution of domestic production to household food baskets. There has been accelerated deforestation for cooking fuel, soil degradation, and a decline in land productivity. Food imports are increasing dramatically, particularly for eggs, meat, milk, and occasionally vegetables.

It is in this context that HDN (Haitian Development Network) has been financially supporting the implementation of three pilot projects in Kenscoff since 2023. As a result, SOHADERK has been able to transform innovative concepts into concrete realities in Kenscoff.

  1. Energy Transition: The biogas production project using methanization from organic waste.

  2. Agricultural Development: The project supporting the extraction and marketing of castor oil (Ricinus communis) in Kenscoff.

  3. Food Security: The “Mixed-Purpose Poultry Farming Project (Laying Hens) in the Western Department, Kenscoff Municipality.”

1. Energy Transition: Biogas Plant in Lefèvre

Faced with deforestation and the high cost of propane, this project has enabled the installation of a biogas production unit.

  • Background: In Lefèvre, local organic waste is now transformed into clean energy for cooking.

  • Impact: This reduces reliance on charcoal, protects the immediate environment, and provides a natural fertilizer (digestate) for local farmers.

2. Agricultural Value Chain Development: Castor Oil Sector (Lwil Maskriti)

This project has structured a value chain around an iconic Haitian product, often underutilized industrially in Kenscoff.

  • Context: The funding facilitated the purchase of extraction equipment and established marketing channels.

  • Impact: By processing castor beans locally, SOHADERK created local jobs and increased farmers’ incomes by providing them with a stable market for their harvest.

3. Food Security: “Ze-Lakay” Pilot Project

To reduce dependence on egg imports and combat malnutrition, SOHADERK launched a poultry production unit.

  • Context: This pilot project focuses on the local and sustainable production of fresh eggs in Kenscoff and the strengthening of poultry farmers’ flocks.

  • Impact: Increased income for over 100 farmers through the creation of more than 100 small, local egg production businesses. Thus, “Ze-Lakay” strengthens the circular economy of the municipality by providing accessible, high-quality protein, while demonstrating the technical viability of raising laying hens in mountainous areas.

These initiatives demonstrate how the partnership between HDN and SOHADERK promotes economic self-reliance and community resilience in Kenscoff.
